Virtology isn't conventional therapy, and it isn't coaching. It's the work that reaches the layer beneath both — where character is actually built, one virtue at a time.
Created by Dr. Eduardo Casarotto · Instituto Virtudes — the culmination of a century of thinkers who tried to reach beneath behaviour, grounded at last in neuroscience.
It stands in a long line of thinkers who each tried to reach the layer under the surface — the unconscious, the mask, the armor — and it completes what they were reaching for by grounding it in how the brain actually changes.
The depth psychologists mapped the inner world; the behaviourists showed that behaviour is learned; neuroscience explained the mechanism of change. Virtology is where they meet — it takes what a century of thinkers could only describe and makes it buildable, turning insight into competences you can actually train.

Brazilian psychoanalyst and researcher, Dr. Eduardo Casarotto is the founder of Virtology. Across roughly thirty years of comparative study — thousands of religious, philosophical and wisdom traditions, read through the neuroscience of character — he mapped the 33 virtues as specific, trainable competences. His work has been presented at the United Nations and recognized in academic and legislative settings; his books, lectures and certified training continue at Instituto Virtudes.
Everything on this site brings his work into English — faithful to the science, in partnership with the Institute.
Years of therapy. Money on coaching. Books, retreats, breathwork, emotional-intelligence training. You got insight. You got language for your pain. You got relief that didn't last — and the patterns stayed.
That isn't your fault, and it isn't a lack of effort. It's structural. Nearly every mainstream approach works on the surface — thoughts, feelings, behaviour — and leaves the structure generating them untouched. Cognitive therapy rewires thought patterns but leaves the underlying armor intact. Coaching trains behaviour but ignores the architecture producing it. Holistic work soothes the nervous system without reaching why it was dysregulated.
It rarely does — because insight and the structure that generates a pattern live on different layers. You can understand your anxiety perfectly and still feel it every morning. That gap is the whole reason "I know exactly why I do this" so seldom becomes "I no longer do this." Virtology starts one layer down, at the structure itself.
In Virtology, pride isn't arrogance or vanity. It's the primitive need to feel important and to belong — wired into the deepest, oldest part of the brain before we had language, before we had choice. It runs beneath every defense you've ever built, deciding in milliseconds which parts of you get to show and which must be hidden. It is what builds the armor.
That gives Virtology a precise causal chain: primitive pride → pain → a pride-driven defense → armor → the loss of a virtue. This reframes something most approaches get backwards. Trauma isn't the root — pride is. Trauma is what triggers pride into action, but pride is already there from birth. Anxiety, chronic control, perfectionism, the inability to rest, avoidance, rage — each is pride's response to a pain that was never metabolized.
Trauma is not the root. Pride is. Trauma is only what triggers it — pride was already there, deciding which parts of you would be allowed to show.
The view of Virtology · Dr. Eduardo Casarotto
It's already in use — at a scale most personal-development frameworks never reach. According to Instituto Virtudes, Virtology and its virtue-based programs have been adopted institutionally:
Prisons. Brazil's prison-administration foundation (FUNAP) adopted the virtue program The New Me — The Eight Fundamental Virtues across the prison system, where inmates can earn sentence reduction for reading and writing about the virtues. The line most of them repeat when they finish: "if I had learned this earlier, I wouldn't be here."
Schools. Approved by Brazil's FNDE for school adoption; the city of São João del-Rei implemented Virtology across all of its public schools — not as an extra subject, but as the framework teachers work inside.
On the world stage. Virtology has been presented at the United Nations as a framework for human development, and Dr. Casarotto's work has been recognized in academic and legislative settings in Brazil and abroad.
A virtue, in Virtology, is not a moral rule to obey, not a religious ideal (it works the same for atheists, agnostics and believers alike), and not willpower or grit. It's a specific psychological competence your brain can build — the same way it builds memory, coordination or language — grown through three things working together:
Dr. Casarotto mapped 33 of these competences — every culture, every era, pointing to the same capacities under different names. Virtology extracts the neuroscience beneath the metaphors. Each one is a specific, buildable neural capacity:
Each one, in depth, is Step 7 of the trail — The 33 virtues: your toolkit →
A virtuous society isn't utopia. It's what happens when enough individuals rebuild their own inner architecture — the effect scales, from the person to the family to the institution to the culture. A family that stops parenting from unresolved pride stops passing down the same armor it was built from. A child who learns this at seven doesn't spend adulthood undoing it. That's what applied neuroplasticity looks like at scale — not a society kept in line, but one that evolves because its individuals do.
